China probes former top official for promoting Islam

Chinese Communist Party has authorized a corruption inquiry into Wang Zhengwei, a senior Chinese official who was previously an influential advocate of Muslim culture, The Wall Street Journal reports.

 

Wang, who is a Hui Muslim and a vice chairman of China’s top political advisory body 'the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Congress' is being investigated for abuse of power and corruption.

 

The investigation began because Mr. Wang had allegedly promoted 'unrestrained Muslim culture' while serving as Communist Party chief in Ningxia. 

 

No formal criminal charges have been brought against Mr. Wang.
